Range of Motion Terminology :
Range of Motion (ROM) - the minimum amount of movement that is possible at a joint
Functional Range of Motion (FROM) - the range of motion necessary to comfortably and effectively complete activities of daily living.
Passive Range of Motion (PROM) - the range of motion of a joint that is moved by anoutside force.
Active Range of Motion (AROM) - the range of motion of a joint that is moved by the muscles that act on the joint.
Goniometry Tips to Remember:
Make sure the client’s feet are both planted on the floor (if seated)
Keep an eye out for compensatory movements from client
Use the appropriate size goniometer - 8" or 12" for shoulder and elbow ROMs and 8" for wrist ROMs
Before Assessing and Measuring ROM
Demonstrate to the client the action you want the client to perform
Ask the client to then perform said action
Ask the client to repeat said action again and measure with the goniometer accordingly
