Updated: Nov 9, 2018

Range of Motion Terminology :

  • Range of Motion (ROM) - the minimum amount of movement that is possible at a joint

  • Functional Range of Motion (FROM) - the range of motion necessary to comfortably and effectively complete activities of daily living.

  • Passive Range of Motion (PROM) - the range of motion of a joint that is moved by anoutside force.

  • Active Range of Motion (AROM) - the range of motion of a joint that is moved by the muscles that act on the joint.

Goniometry Tips to Remember:

  • Make sure the client’s feet are both planted on the floor (if seated)

  • Keep an eye out for compensatory movements from client

  • Use the appropriate size goniometer - 8" or 12" for shoulder and elbow ROMs and 8" for wrist ROMs

Before Assessing and Measuring ROM

  • Demonstrate to the client the action you want the client to perform

  • Ask the client to then perform said action

  • Ask the client to repeat said action again and measure with the goniometer accordingly
